Name/TitleGlass Funnel Beaker, Swedish History Museum, 08189_HST
About this objectGlass vessels, sometimes fragmentary, are found in over 40 of the Birka graves, and the funnel type, as shown here, is the most common present in over half of these. This one was found in Bj.577.
The funnel is a form that was common in Europe during the Carolingian period (800–87) and, although there were glass workshops in the Viking realm, this was probably brought from the European mainland.
