Maritime Routes

Our original exhibition included exhibits from the sacred island of Okinoshima, on which offerings were made by sea travellers between the mainland and the Japanese archipelago. We have continued this interest, with visits to more of the islands off Japan, including the Oki Islands with their sources of obsidian and the Tsushima Islands with remains of a historic portage.

The Indian Ocean

In 2025 we extended this maritime focus across the Indian Ocean to the interaction between Japan and Korea and south and southeast Asia, our Indian Ocean project. Workshops with colleagues working on maritime archaeology and history are being held in Korea, Japan and the UK in autumn 2025. Further details of the project will then be posted here.
