Name/TitleSasanian Glass Bowl, Tokyo National Museum, J-37204, ICP
About this objectExcavated in 1963 from the 5th century tomb No. 126 in the Niizawa Senzuka Tumulus Cluster at Kasahira, Nara, in Japan, this bowl was found with a glass dish [EXH133] placed together like a cup and saucer. Both were probably produced by a free-blowing method,
Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis was applied to a shard of green-coloured glass in 2017 also found in the tomb and believed to be from this bowl. It showed that the fragment's chemical composition is similar to glass produced in Sasasnian Persia in the 4th–7th centuries, possibly at workships near Ctseiphon. Similar glass bowls have been found in this area and it is probable that this piece was made there and transported to Japan.
