About this objectFolding shrines such as this are found in both the Buddhist and Christian worlds, both for domestic use and for travel. This one was made in Tang China and was taken to Japan by the monk, Kūkai (空海; 774–835). It is now in Kongōbuji (金剛峯寺) on Mount Koya (高野山, Kōyasan), a stop for pilgrims on one of Japan's many pilgrimage routes.
