Name/TitleReplica of Silla Ship, Korea National Maritime Museum.
About this objectShips made in Korea were renowned from the Baekje period (18 BC–AD 660), when the technology moved to Japan. But travellers from Japan, such as Ennin [EXH92], sometimes changed ships when reaching Korea to Silla-made ones for the voyage to China as they were considered safer.
During the United Silla period (668–935), ship technology improved further with V-bottomd and compartmentalized hulls. The Japanese history Shoku Nihongii (続日本紀), noted that they 'enable men to surf across the biggest of waves'. During the Silla-Tang War (670–76), the Silla navy defeated the Tang Navy 22 times out of 23 engagements.
