About this objectThis is one of the oldest extant bells in England, hanging with two other later bells in St Peter’s Church, West Tytherley. It possibly dates to 1260, although the church was rebuilt in the 19thc. Bells had become common in churches by the second millennium and were hung on a spindle and hook: the practice of hanging them on wheels so that they could turn full circle came later. Larger bells had become popular and were often forged by monks.
