Name/TitleGold crucifixion cross from Funen Island, Denmark, National Museum of Denmark, C42515
About this objectDiscovered in 2016 by a metal detectorist on Funen Island, Denmark, and fashioned from gold filigree, this is now thought to be the earliest known depiction of Christ in Denmark probably predating the Jelling Stone of 965 [EXH18]. It is very similar to a crucifixion cross in silver filigree [EXH5] found in a grave at Birka, Sweden and an incomplete one found in a woman's grave at Ketting, Denmark, but this one is double the size of these and in gold rather than silver. The discovery of these personal crosses indicate that conversion to Christianity was taking place in this region.
