Name/TitleFujinoki Tomb (藤ノ木古墳), tack and armour, Nara National Museum
About this objectSeveral series of excavations at Fujinoki tomb, starting in 1985, revealed the remains of at least two individuals and numerous burial goods including ceramics, glass beads and more horse trappings than found in any other tomb to date. The tack, which included saddle bows decorated with fish, elephants, phoenixes, rabbits, and other motifs, has been compared stylistically with artefacts found in the Northern Yan kingdom (407–36), now north-eastern China. Such styles are not seen elsewhere in Japan or Korea.
The tomb also contained funerary shoes and a crown, as seen in the Silla tombs in Gyeongju [EXH117 and see Burial Bling).
