Name/TitleFunerary Urn Lid from Spong Hill Cemetery, Norwich Castle Museum, 1994.192.1
About this objectCremation was not uncommon in Roman Britain and continued beyond the period of their rule, as shown by this sixth-century urn lid from the cemetery at Spong Hill in Norfolk, England. Excavations here between 1972 and 1984 found over two thousand cremations and fifty seven inhumations. This lid is particularly interesting as it is a rare example of a sculpted human figure from this period.
Although the body of the urn to which this lid belonged was not found, many others were didscovered at this and other sites. Their decorations include animal stamps and swastikas, while some have inscriptions in runic script.
